Why would you want to know how they work?? Well, if you are going to replace one of these diaphragms in your carburetor, then knowing the detailed workings (the function of all the tiny fuel holes and how the diaphragm operates the carburetor) will help you make a far better job of repairing your lawnmower. After all, why does college exist? When a trainee mechanic begins his/her career, they do the hands-on work (under supervision) and have a few years studying at college as well. Why?? So that they get the full picture. This way they actually get the repair experience and the theoretical knowledge of what they are repairing. For example, if you took your beloved car to the local garage you would expect the mechanic to have hands-on work experience and studied what they are doing at college level. Why? Because then you know that they know their subject inside-out. You expect this much as a basic standard from any mechanic who works on your car. Why would you cut corners on your lawnmower then?? In fact, I could NOT have became a qualified repair engineer, followed by a Science graduate and post graduate, followed by the creation of these videos, if I never had these wonderful people in my life. Sadly, some of them are no longer with us to see these videos, which I really want to dedicate to them. My very first manager (Mr Nadin), who gave me a chance straight out of school despite me not being the most ideal candidate for the position of engineers apprentices at the time. He believed he could make an engineer of me. So first of all, if it were not for him I wouldn't be here with all of this knowledge today. I will always respect him and remain grateful to him for what he did for me. I'm so pleased I achieved an apprentice of the year award in 1994 to give him back some satisfaction that I was working hard, and that his belief in me paid off. I also want to dedicate these to my Father, who is still a practicing engineer, for always pushing me into this field and ensuring I applied my mind to it. More than anyone else, I want to dedicate these to my amazing late mother, who nurtured, cared, loved and motivated me all of my life. They rarely need any major repair work and as long as they have regular diaphragm changes, and that the primer bulbs are in good repair with no damage, then these engines will run very good for many years.
